Recently, I asked the Lord to give me a strategy for discipline. Because sometimes I feel like I'm drowning and I know I need some help. And OF COURSE, He answered me right away and gave me 3 of the easiest things to do right from the book of Daniel. I hateeee when people assume that I know a bible story so I’m not going to do that to you. I’m going to give you a modernized summary of Daniel chapter 1. Let’s call it the AGBFV –Al’s Ghetto But Funny Version Bible (However the real version is much better so please read it when you get a chance and tell me what you got out of it.)
Daniel was a boy who was amongst a group of kids forced, by an evil king, to go into this training camp. These kids were selected because they were dope, pretty much. Like these are the boys that were the High School star football players, most likely to succeed and most attractive superlative winners. (Aka the boys that I would’ve been running down behind-ahem). This program was designed to produce young men that could serve under the king after 3 years. The curriculum ultimately would strip the boys of their identity and pimp their intelligence, skills, good looks and talents so that they would be little polished puppets for the king. While in training, the boys were to eat the king’s food and drink his wine but Daniel and 3 of his friends requested that they be exempted from the king’s diet because the food and wine was contrary to their faith and conscience. So Daniel had the bright idea to only eat veggies and drink water (hence the ‘Daniel fast’) for 10 days to prove that honoring the Lord would render them in better condition than the boys who ate the king’s food. To make a long story not as long, at the end of the 10 days, the boys were indeed way better off than the boys who did not fast.
Ok so, little bro Daniel, had to be extremely disciplined to pull this off. Homeboy was young. And no shade to the brothers but you know it’s often said that guys mature at least 3-5 years slower than us. These boys were in a place of royalty and given the food of a king. What pre-teen boys do you know will volunteer to trade good and fancy food for veggies and water? I’ll wait...
3 Simple Keys to the Discipline Necessary for Success
Cut Out the Consumption of Bad Content
Daniel decided he wasn’t going to eat the king’s meat. You and I have to look at what we are letting the world feed us. We have to decide that we will no longer be fed certain entertainment, social media and other things that we depend on to fulfill us. Because just like bad food, junk makes us sick and it takes a long time to digest it and get back out of our system.
Stop Doing Things that Negatively Impact Decision Making
I researched and found sources to say that this particular wine (unlike some others) was intoxicating. So literally, Daniel didn’t want to be drunk. Some of us must make the decision to put off anything that impairs our senses and impacts our decision making. This can be anything from alcohol to people.
Be Intentional with Time and Relationships
Daniel and his squad ate veggies and water. I imagine that Daniel’s new diet cut the prep and cook time down significantly! I’m also going to guess that they weren’t eating around the fellowship hall table with the rest of the trainees. I envision that Daniel and his friends intentionally pulled away from the other boys and stayed to themselves. Being very specific about your relationships and time makes a lot of difference when you are grinding for your success. We must be purposeful to align ourselves with people that help us stay disciplined with our time and focused on our visions. And sometimes we are going to have to pull away from everyone, in order to stay on track.
I’m confident that this level of discipline although simply put, has to be a challenge. But the reward clearly paid off for Daniel. Not only did they look better and were fatter, but the Lord also blessed them to the point where they were 10 times better all around than their peers! This is the type of success that I want! And discipline is the key! Now I promise you that I am not excited about typing this, but I am excited about the results and I’m ready to move to the next level. Therefore I’m willing to make the sacrifice.
